The Most Recognized Meal in History, Rendered in Stone
Leonardo da Vinci painted it in Milan in 1495. For the past five centuries, artists across every medium have returned to it. This piece represents something rarer still — the moment that image meets the ancient craft of Madaba, and a painting becomes a mosaic, assembled by hand, one stone at a time, in the Holy Land itself.
The Design
This large rectangular mosaic reproduces the composition of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper with faithful attention to its architecture and drama. Christ sits at the center of a long table draped in cream and ivory, framed by a golden arched doorway that opens to a pale blue landscape behind him — the same device Leonardo used to draw the eye and place Christ in light. To his left and right, the twelve apostles react in cascading clusters of surprise, question, and sorrow to his announcement that one among them will betray him. Every gesture — the raised hand, the turned shoulder, the leaning figure — has been translated into natural stone tesserae with remarkable fidelity.
The color palette follows Leonardo's original closely: warm amber and ochre walls, a coffered ceiling in terracotta and brown, and deep teal-green windows with ornamental tracery lining both sides of the room. The figures are rendered in the full range of their robes — white, rust, gold, green, and deep brown — with faces individuated enough to convey emotion at a distance. The black wooden frame completes the piece cleanly, giving it the weight and presence of a framed painting.
What makes this mosaic distinctive is its location of origin. Madaba sits in the heart of biblical Jordan — a city where early Christians built churches and filled their floors with sacred imagery in stone. For an artisan from Madaba to render The Last Supper is not merely a technical exercise; it is a meeting of two sacred traditions, the Renaissance and the Byzantine, in a medium that was already ancient when Leonardo was born.

The Tradition Behind It
Madaba's Christian community has been expressing faith through mosaic for over fifteen centuries — long before the Renaissance, long before Leonardo. The artisans who made this piece work in a city where sacred art in stone is not a historical curiosity but a living practice, passed from hand to hand across generations. To hang this in your home is to hold two great traditions of devotion at once.
Each mosaic is unique. Dimensions and stone coloring may vary slightly from the photo shown.
